How to use the kit in 3 steps

What is the 2026 Cybersecurity Awareness Month theme?

The 2026 theme is "Don't Make It Easy for Them." It's led by the National Cybersecurity Alliance and CISA, and it focuses on four everyday habits:

• Use strong passphrases and a password manager. Long, unique passphrases for every account, stored somewhere safer than memory or a sticky note.
• Turn on multi-factor authentication. A stolen passphrase alone should not be enough to get in.
• Recognize and report phishing. Pause on unexpected urgency, check the sender, and report anything suspicious instead of deleting it.
• Keep software updated. Turn on automatic updates so known holes close quickly.

CISA is also running a critical infrastructure track this year, "Securing the Next 250," built around three actions: reduce your attack surface, replace end-of-life systems, and be ready to recover.

What's new in the 2026 kit

• Passphrases, not passwords. The advice follows NIST SP 800-63B-4 (2025) and CISA: length first (16+ characters, or 5 to 7 random words), a unique passphrase for every account, and no forced symbol mixes or calendar-based changes.
• Phishing advice for the AI era. Typos aren't the tell anymore. The kit teaches people to watch for pressure, secrecy, and requests that move money or access.
• Current reporting steps. Report at work first. At home: forward phishing emails to reportphishing@apwg.org, forward scam texts to 7726, and report fraud at ReportFraud.ftc.gov.
• Current numbers. Stats come from the FBI's 2025 Internet Crime Report and the Verizon 2026 Data Breach Investigations Report, with the source printed on each piece.

A four-week plan for October 2026

One habit per week, one message per week, and one thing people can actually do. The playbook and calendar in the kit spell out each day.

• Week 1 (Oct 1-9): Phishing. Spot the signs, then report. Our guide on how to spot a phishing email is a good companion read.
• Week 2 (Oct 12-16): Passphrases. Five to seven random words, a different one for every account, and a password manager to remember them.
