Hook Security vs Proofpoint: An Honest Comparison for MSPs and SMBs (2026)

Comparison of Hook Security and Proofpoint security awareness training for MSPs and SMBs

Short answer: choose Proofpoint if you already run Proofpoint email security and want awareness training tied to its threat intelligence, or if you are an MSP that wants email filtering and training on one Proofpoint bill. Choose Hook if training is the job you are hiring for: a coaching-first program that runs itself, one console for every client, and published prices.

Updated November 3, 2026. Proofpoint is one of the largest names in email security, and its training is solid. This page says so plainly. The real difference is what each company is built around: Proofpoint sells training as part of an email-security-led platform, while Hook is a security awareness company first, built multi-tenant for MSPs and the small and mid-sized businesses they serve.

The short version

  • Who it is for: Proofpoint's enterprise training product, ZenGuide, draws on Proofpoint's threat intelligence and its people-risk tools. Its MSP line, Proofpoint Essentials, bundles email security with training for smaller clients. Hook is trusted by hundreds of MSPs and trains 250,000+ employees monthly.
  • What you are buying: with Proofpoint, training is one module in a suite whose center is the inbox gateway. Essentials lists security awareness as "available on its own or as an add-on to any package." With Hook, training and phishing simulations are the whole product, so you keep whatever email filter you already use.
  • Pricing: Proofpoint's ZenGuide page offers a "How to buy" link and no prices, and its MSP page refers to partner-exclusive pricing without figures. Hook publishes its prices, with self-serve plans for small teams and a quoted Growth plan for 61 or more seats. For MSPs, partner pricing is available on request.
  • Training model: ZenGuide enrolls people into learning paths by behavior and role, and turns real attacks into simulations. Hook is coaching-first: a click opens a private learning moment that shows the red flags the employee missed, and remediation training assigns itself by tactic.
  • Running it: Hook's Autopilot picks and sends a phishing simulation and enrolls people in a new course every cycle, with no one on your team launching them. Prefer control? The same platform is fully self-managed.

Where Proofpoint is strong

Proofpoint earns its reputation. ZenGuide, the successor to Proofpoint Security Awareness Training, uses Proofpoint threat intelligence to choose content, enrolls learners automatically through adaptive groups, and builds multi-step pathways of lessons, simulations and assessments. Its ThreatFlip feature clones a real attack, strips the harmful parts and turns it into a simulation template in one click. It offers a report-suspicious button for email and mobile, gamified content and WCAG-based accessibility settings.

For MSPs, Proofpoint Essentials is a credible option. Proofpoint's MSP brief describes a multi-tenant platform, consumptive monthly billing with no commitments, 24/7 support, 50+ awareness modules and content in more than 35 languages. In December 2025 Proofpoint also completed its $1.8 billion acquisition of Hornetsecurity, which brings more than 12,000 MSP and channel partners. Even a competitor's Proofpoint-alternatives roundup calls it "a solid choice, especially if you want integrated email security with training." If you want one vendor for the email gateway and the training, weigh that seriously.

Where the fit breaks for MSPs and smaller companies

Proofpoint's value peaks when you buy its email protection too. ZenGuide's people-risk features lean on Proofpoint's own platform data, and Essentials sells training next to its filtering bundles. If a client already runs Microsoft Defender or another gateway, you are buying training from an email security vendor, and the reason to pick Proofpoint shrinks.

Proofpoint's MSP lineup is also changing. Its MSP page now lists a separate Security Awareness Service alongside "Hornetsecurity by Proofpoint," and Proofpoint says Hornetsecurity will run as a dedicated business unit for MSPs and SMBs. Ask which training product and which console your clients will be on in two years before you migrate them.

For an MSP, the questions that decide renewals are operational. Can one technician run 40 clients from one screen? Can you launch a program to every client at once? Does each client get its own branded report? Does the program run without a tech launching each cycle? Hook's MSP program answers yes to each, with directories that sync per client and consolidated portfolio reporting.

There is also a doctrine difference. ZenGuide's admin dashboard includes per-person risk scoring built from attack, vulnerability and privilege data. Hook does not rank people. It measures resilience by manipulation tactic and coaches at the moment of the mistake, so employees learn to spot the next attempt instead of being labeled by the last one.

For a 25-person company buying direct, the gap is process. Proofpoint does not publish a price, so you start with a sales conversation or a partner quote. Hook's Starter plan, for 11 to 60 seats, is bought online by card, with every feature included, no setup fees and the account ready within 24 hours.

What switching actually involves

  • Export your history: pull simulation and training records before your Proofpoint term ends. Your email filtering can stay where it is.
  • Connect your directory: Microsoft, Google or Okta brings your employees in. MSPs connect each client's directory once, and people sync as they join or leave.
  • Safelist: a few business days before every simulation, preview contacts get a heads-up email with the sending IPs to safelist, including in a Proofpoint gateway if you keep one.
  • Turn on Autopilot: pick monthly, every two months or quarterly, and an audience. Hook runs each cycle from there.
  • Pilot first: move one team, or one client, for a full cycle before the rest.

The bottom line

Stay on Proofpoint if you run its email security, want training fed by the same threat intelligence, and value one vendor and one bill for both. Choose Hook if training is what you are buying: an MSP that needs one console and branded reports for every client, or a smaller company that wants a managed program with published prices and no sales call.

Frequently asked questions

Is Proofpoint security awareness training good for MSPs?

Yes, especially for MSPs that already resell Proofpoint email security. Proofpoint Essentials offers a multi-tenant platform with monthly billing and training as an add-on, and the Hornetsecurity acquisition adds a second MSP line. Hook was built multi-tenant for MSPs around training alone, and partner pricing is available on request.

How much does Proofpoint security awareness training cost compared with Hook?

Proofpoint does not publish prices for ZenGuide or its MSP training; you buy through Proofpoint or a partner. Hook lists its prices on its pricing page, with self-serve plans for small teams and a quoted Growth plan for 61 or more seats. For MSPs, partner pricing is available on request.

Do I need Proofpoint email security to use Proofpoint training?

No. Proofpoint says Essentials security awareness is available on its own or as an add-on. But ZenGuide's people-risk insights draw on Proofpoint's own platform, so you get the most from it when you also run Proofpoint email protection. Hook works alongside any email gateway.
